ABOUT BATON ROUGE
Baton Rouge is the capital of the state of Louisiana. It is on
the east bank of the Mississippi River about 80 miles north of
New Orleans. It was one of the earliest settlements (1719) made
by French colonists.
Baton Rouge is a beautiful city with flowering magnolia trees,
picturesque lakes, and dignified mansions. It has almost one-hundred
chemical plants and is known as the "Chemical Center of
the South." Across the Mississippi River from Baton Rouge
are large sugar plantations. This region in known as the "Sugar
Bowl of America." The Louisiana state capitol is a beautiful
building built with marble from almost every marble-producing
country in the world.
Baton Rouge is the home of Louisiana State University (LSU),
and Southern University (SU), Louisiana Technical College, Pennington
Biomedical Research Center, Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center, and
the Baton Rouge Kingfish and Blue Marlins professional sports
teams.
